Reports on a study of where and how migrating salmonids jump over natural stream obstacles. Sockeye salmon behavior is analyzed, and an experimental fishladder simulator is developed to study jumping preferences and biomechanics of kokanee salmon. Data obtained are used to develop a model defining the takeoff angle, minimum horizontal distance between takeoff and landing, and the minimum successful takeoff velocity. Differences observed suggest that the species of impeded fish should be considered in designing effective fishladders.
