I don't remember most of the conversation, but I do recall my younger brother Mark calling me in November 2007 to tell me about his latest stair climbing conquest, the Sears Tower (now Willis Tower) in Chicago. At some point during the call, he suggested that I should participate in an upcoming stair climb at the AON building in Los Angeles the following April. I remember replying, ?Why would I want to do that? He said he was helping recruit climbers since it was a brand-new climb that would raise money for a charity. I said I'd think about it.Mark made sure that I did the climb. There was no way I could ever have imagined how big a step I was taking when I set foot in the stairwell that day. It was the first of 1,393 steps I took to the top of a sixty-two-story building, and those steps changed my life forever. I was fifty-one years old, five feet four-and-three-quarters inches tall, and weighed well over 220 pounds at the time. In the two years following, I lost eighty pounds without ever setting foot in a gym, without eating special ?diet? foods or spending money on supplements, without investing in anything other than my time and a good pair of running shoes. In doing so, I found true freedom. I changed my life by eating less and exercising more?I lost fifty pounds in eight months, and over eighty pounds in two years. By following the same basic eating plan and staying active, I continue to maintain a healthy weight.

Native Americans win the battle for the post–Civil War American West in a fascinating alternate history fantasy from “one of the genre’s best writers” (The Washington Post). Nebula and Locus Award–winning author Pamela Sargent “loads her Springfield and heads into the post–Civil War era with a rousing tale of what might have happened had the Indians united against white encroachment. If Harry Turtledove has been driving the Alternate America stage, Pamela is now riding shotgun” (Jack McDevitt). In a different nineteenth-century version of America, after the end of the White Man’s Civil War, the victorious North sets its sights on westward expansion. But their army is greatly depleted after years of bloody conflict. And their Native American adversaries are ready . . . and waiting. As the visionary Lakota chief, Touch-the-Clouds, cements the necessary alliances with once rival tribes, two separate worlds brace for the inevitable confrontation to come. Lemuel Rowland, a US government official and full-blood Seneca Indian, has lived among the white man for most of his life. Now the approaching storm threatens to destroy everything he believes in. Torn between the culture he’s embraced and his true heritage, Lemuel has been entrusted with a grave responsibility and knows he must prove his loyalty. But to which side? Populated by a large and colorful cast of unforgettable characters—including Sitting Bull, Chief Crazy Horse, Calamity Jane, and other real-life personages—Climb the Wind is a “most enjoyable and entertaining new alternate history adventure which . . . brings a new dimension to the form” (Gahan Wilson).

What do rock stars, Nobel laureates, bestselling novelists, astronauts, and attorneys have in common? A teacher changed their lives. Like them, most of us can name a teacher who gave us not only good instruction but also confidence and drive. But, in the face of teachers being blamed for a variety of social and economic woes, teachers themselves can easily wonder whether they are making a difference in students’ lives. When veteran teacher Bruce Holbert asked himself this question, his wife, Holly, responded by sending letters to hundreds of people she had never met and had no reason to believe would respond, asking about teachers who mattered to them. She was overwhelmed by answers. Thank You, Teacher presents more than eighty of these up-close-and-personal stories. By a delightfully diverse range of contributors, these essays are wise and witty testaments to the teachers who do what they do every day without expecting recognition, but who so richly deserve it.

When legal loopholes keep Tina Lane's vicious killers from facing trial, her husband Mike Lane wants only one thing-justice. In a lengthy and valiant quest to avenge his only love, he composes a stunning document that has the potential to dramatically alter the very core of the American judicial system. Lane relies on his client, Senator Jeff Wheatly, to help him further his work. But when the envious senator presents Lane's work to the president as his own, Lane finds himself in grave danger. As the senator struggles for control of Lane's document and the power it could bring, he finds that nothing is out of the question-not even murder. And, with unlimited resources at his disposal, the president himself is just as willing to cross all lines in order to gain control of the most powerful tool in modern legal history. The CIA, the Secret Service, the IRS, the Philadelphia Police Department, and the Senate Ethics Committee all investigate the senator and his connection to multiple shocking deaths, and each organization finds that it has a vested interest in the success of Lane's radical plan. In the end, nothing is spared. Not love. Not life. Not law.

*A NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW Editor's Choice Pick* From an award-winning journalist covering gender and politics comes an inside look at the female candidates fighting back and winning elections in the crucial 2018 midterms. After November 8, 2016, first came the sadness; then came the rage, the activism, and the protests; and, finally, for thousands of women, the next step was to run for office—many of them for the first time. More women campaigned for local or national office in the 2018 election cycle than at any other time in US history, challenging accepted notions about who seeks power and who gets it. Journalist Caitlin Moscatello reported on this wave of female candidates for New York magazine’s The Cut, Glamour, and Elle. And in See Jane Win, she further documents this pivotal time in women’s history. Closely following four candidates throughout the entire process, from the decision to run through Election Day, See Jane Win takes readers inside their exciting, winning campaigns and the sometimes thrilling, sometimes brutal realities of running for office while female. MEET THE CANDIDATES: Abigail Spanberger, a mom of three young girls and a former CIA operative, running for Congress in Virginia to unseat Freedom Caucus member Dave Brat. Catalina Cruz, a Colombian-born attorney whose state assembly bid could make her the first Dreamer elected in New York and only the third in the country. Anna Eskamani, an Iranian-American woman running for state office in Florida, with a campaign motivated by her mother’s health-care struggles and the Pulse Nightclub shootings. London Lamar, a Memphis native looking to become the youngest female representative in the Tennessee state house, running in one of the only Democratic and Black-majority areas of a largely conservative state. Beyond the 2018 victories, Moscatello speaks with researchers, strategists, and the leaders of organizations that helped women win. What she discovers is that the candidates who triumphed in 2018 emphasized authenticity and passion instead of conforming to the stereotype of what a candidate should look or sound like, a formula that will be more relevant than ever as we approach the 2020 presidential election.

The characters, plots, and potent language of C. S. Lewis's novels reveal everywhere the modern writer' admiration for Dante's Divine Comedy. Throughout his career Lewis drew on the structure, themes, and narrative details of Dante's medieval epic to present his characters as spiritual pilgrims growing toward God. Dante's portrayal of sin and sanctification, of human frailty and divine revelation, are evident in all of Lewis's best work. Readers will see how a modern author can make astonishingly creative use of a predecessor's material - in this case, the way Lewis imitated and adapted medieval ideas about spiritual life for the benefit of his modern audience. Nine chapters cover all of Lewis's novels, from Pilgrim's Regress and his science-fiction to The Chronicles of Narnia and Till We Have Faces. Readers will gain new insight into the sources of Lewis's literary imagination that represented theological and spiritual principles in his clever, compelling, humorous, and thoroughly human stories.

CLIMB challenges the negative connotations associated with “stewardship” and invites congregations to completely change the conversation around this critically important topic. Instead of talking about the needs of the church budget, CLIMB suggests a discovery of your congregation s compelling vision for ministry. Instead of selecting your stewardship leaders by default, CLIMB encourages the development of strong leadership through setting clear and challenging expectations. CLIMB involves changing the entire culture of your congregation to one of gratitude, where conversations revolve around sharing God's abundance rather than holding on fearfully. CLIMB encourages the sharing of ministry stories rather than pledging to a budget. And, finally, CLIMB asserts that if you truly believe expressing generosity results in a deeper connection to God, you have no choice but to boldly ask others to become more generous givers.
